Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People

Welcome to HammondCare Greenwich Hospital’s Riverglen Unit. Riverglen aims to provide a place of safety and treatment in a secure, modern setting for older people in the acute phase of a mental health disorder.

HammondCare Greenwich Hospital’s Riverglen Unit is a 20 bed acute, gazetted in patient unit for patients 65 years and over who:

  • Have or are at high risk of developing a mental health disorder
  • May be presenting with severe behavioral or psychiatric symptoms of Dementia (BPSD)

Patients who are under 65 years may also be considered for admittance to Riverglen if they have chronic, serious or complex medical conditions and are presenting with either of the above symptoms.

The Riverglen team

Riverglen provides patients with multidisciplinary care. The team includes Consultant Psychiatrists, registrars, nurses, Allied Health professionals and consultative Geriatrician services.

Our team of mental health professionals will assess your psychological and physical health and prescribe appropriate treatment in consultation with yourself and your carers.

The referral process

Reasons for referral can range from seeking an initial diagnosis to the review and treatment of an ongoing illness.

Riverglen is the main acute mental health service specifically for older people in the Ryde / North Shore / Hornsby area. Priority for admission will be given to patients residing in these areas.

Referrals for admission to the inpatient unit must follow the below referral pathways:

  • PATU intake system (for current inpatients in the area health system)
  • SMHSOP Community Team in Ryde, Lower North Shore and Hornsby. Access to these services can be made via the Mental Health Telephone Access Line on 1800 011 511.
  • Hospitals within the North Sydney Area Health Service.

If you are not currently a patient in any of the above services access to these services can be made via the Mental Health Telephone Access Line on 1800 011 511.
